We’re working hard to create a happier, healthier tomorrow for you and your teeth! Turns out, having a healthier smile — and sharper mental focus — could be as simple as chewing sugar-free gum.
Gum + Oral Health
Worldwide, oral diseases are the fourth most expensive conditions to treat. And while tooth decay is largely preventable, it still affects anywhere from 60 to 90 percent of schoolchildren and nearly all adults.
How does sugar-free chewing gum improve your pearly whites (and gums and tongue)? For years, dozens of dental associates and the FDI World Dental Federation have recognized the oral care benefits of chewing sugar-free gum because it:
- Increases saliva, the natural defense system for your mouth and teeth.
- Helps remove food particles before they get trapped.
- Reduces risk of cavities by keeping the right levels of minerals in your teeth and pH in your mouth.
Gum + Focus
Did you know that gum chewing can also sharpen your mental attention? Studies from the U.S. show that chewing gum can be a refreshing way to maintain focus on a task at hand. For example, our 5® gum team is exploring how chewing gum might help video gamers improve their concentration and reaction time.
Gum + You
If you’re constantly on the go, flying through your workday, taking care of your family and yourself, join the club! And bring some sugar-free gum along for the ride to freshen your breath, clean your teeth between meals and snacks, and sharpen your brain.
Gum + The Future
Our oral care crusade began nearly a century ago in the 1930s. More recently, our Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program began working with dental professionals to help improve their patients’ oral health education by recommending sugar-free gum as part of a daily oral care routine, alongside brushing and flossing. Now, through the Wrigley Company Foundation, we’re helping more than a million underserved kids and their communities around the world, providing access to education, clean drinking water and oral care.
Why do we do it? Because we chew a lot of gum, which helps us focus on taking action today to create a better future for the people and communities we serve. And that makes us all smile.
